Paint with Moss

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/how-to-paint-moss-designs-in-your-garden-077167

Mix some live de-rocked moss, beer or milk or yogurt and some sugar
and you get moss paint.

Fun for the whole family!

Shazam for torrents

I'd like an app that Shazams the song then queues up a torrent
containing that song automagically!

Revolution

The revolution will not be televised. It will be financial. As the
government has more weapons and allies than we can ever hope to
defeat, the only way to revolt will be to bankrupt it after it has
destroyed it's credit.

Animal face-off! Who would win in a fight between a eight tiny reindeer and 10 lords a-leaping?

Eight tiny reindeer have precisely 32 sharp hooves and 16 sets of
antlers. 10 lords a-leaping might have some dueling pistols. So I
guess the thing you have to ask is how big is the arena? Advantage
lords if they have enough range. Advantage reindeer if they're close
enough to toss some hooves and antlers around.

Then you have to take into account that the fat man will probably be
dropping some damage from the side lines, waking up the lords the
night before since he knows when you're sleeping and can ninja into
your house through your chimney. We all know that lords have chimneys.

I'd have to give this fight to the reindeer.

I used to loathe pomegranate simply because it was such a pain to eat.
Peel a bit, suck the stuff off the seeds without crushing them getting
them out. Yuck!

I learned this secret today... the seeds sink in water, everything
else... floats! So more or less, quarter the pomegranate, then toss it
in a bowl of water. Brush all the seeds off the membrane and you will
now have seedy goodness in the bottom of the bowl.

Less than two minutes later right back in the car.

Updates.

So what's been happening lately? Blackberry announced the 9700,
Android is trying to overtake the iPhone, my iPhone gave me a bit of a
scare when it froze and wouldn't reboot. Dyson came out with a new
"bladeless" fan and I used the Dyson Airblade for the first time.

I've been looking at houses without much success, finally got my name
placard at work and got two non-functioning iPod cables from Deal
Extreme.

There's your update.

Female Behaviour Men Will No Longer Tolerate

1. You say to us, "You're not romantic anymore." Fine, we'll try
harder. But only if you agree to initiate once in a while, too. Deal?

2. Then there's "You never listen." This is not an inherently male
trait. I mean, how many times does a guy have to explain the
infield-fly rule?

3. No, you don't look fat. Did we mention how you never listen?

4. If you ask our opinion, please don't get mad when we give it. The
color of the curtains shouldn't be a referendum on our relationship.

5. It's just a spider, for Pete's sake. Step on it.

6. We worked a 60-hour week, took out the garbage, did the dishes,
paid the bills, walked the dog, changed the oil, picked up the dry
cleaning, read to the kids, and gave you equal time. All we're asking
for is 3 hours on the couch on Sunday.

7. No more deflecting responsibility for crummy behavior with cute and
kittenish responses. You can't giggle your way out of trouble anymore.

8. You know damn well what we're doing in there. Stop asking.

9. Forget the notion that raising kids is harder than maintaining
gainful employment. More important? Yes. But harder? No.

10. If you continue to dump on our best friend, we will probe the
(many) character tics of all your friends.

11. If you want to have kids, you have to have sex. This is not a
complaint. This is science.

12. Somewhere, somehow, women were sold this idea of "fashionably
late." Men don't get this. Make up a fashion emergency if you must,
but don't ask us to be intentionally tardy. It's like asking us to
kick the host in the groin.

13. Yes, that woman is hot. Yes, we appreciate beauty. That's why
we're with you.

14. We do listen. And empathize. But when your troubles have been
analyzed until there's nothing left to talk about, can we please stop
talking about them?

15. If we fell in love with you when you had long hair, we're going to
want you to keep your long hair until death do us part. We'll beg, but
would prefer not to.

16. As for commitment ultimatums, just address numbers 1 through 15 on
this list, then we'll talk.

Thanksgiving glow

Daunted no longer

Well, after being daunted by a piece of .NET code to make a factorial, I'm finding the rest of the coding to actually be fairly easy. Reiterations aren't my strong point it seems, but I'm fairly confident that I can make pages do what I want them to do now.

I think that learning about ASP.NET is also going to help me in my PHP endeavours. I think I can probably charge a bit more upfront for a PHP site since the ASP.NET sites will have a higher residual cost due to hosting.

I just skimmed through an entire chapter in this book in about five minutes BMI calculator included (with some snazzy upgrades) since I already know about HTML properties and what not. It's satisfying to look back at something and realize that the concept you had a problem with was the exception to the norm. It's even more satisfying to retrospectively understand it.

Factorial Code for VB

Man did I ever just have tough time writing a piece of factorial code. The trick is that it keeps feeding it's result back into itself and that is where it gets the new value. Then it'll keep looping until it reaches your "if" statement that returns a result of 0.

What a bitch of a time getting that logic to spit out of my head though!

Survey Says:

Croyez-vous que les femmes peuvent se faire agresser sexuellement par leur mari, conjoint ou partenaire?

Which translates to:

Do you think women can be sexually assaulted by their husbands, spouse or partner?

The survey question seems to be quite leading. Why not leave it at "Do you think women can be sexually assaulted by their domestic partner?" By putting "male" as a variable in this equation we are further ingraining the male as a dominant player in society meant to be taken down a few rungs. Why are we not empowering women to achieve the same status. After all, it's not only the "husbands" who abuse. This I know first hand.

So on the flip side, do I think men can be sexually assaulted by their domestic partner? Yes. Sexual assault should be expanded to include acts where you place your monogamous partner's health at risk. Cheaters male or female open a vector for all manner of STIs, condom or not. A precedent has been set to charge people who willingly attempt to spread HIV, why not expand it to include people who willingly open the gates to everything?

Unwanted children born of an affair This is an abuse both to the partner and to the child/siblings of that child. It's illegal to smoke with your under aged child in the car, why should it be legal to introduce strife into your child's home or bring a child into that strife? Both will have long lasting health effects. The only difference being that tobacco has a target, the tobacco companies. No one advertises cheating on your partner. Or do we...

Some can say the above paragraph infringes on your basic human rights. Lets go over what the United Nations has outlined as basic rights to be provided to children:

Provision: Children have the right to an adequate standard of living, health care, education and services, and to play. These include a balanced diet, a warm bed to sleep in, and access to schooling.

Protection: Children have the right to protection from abuse, neglect, exploitation and discrimination. This includes the right to safe places for children to play; constructive child rearing behavior, and acknowledgment of the evolving capacities of children.

Participation: Children have the right to participate in communities and have programs and services for themselves. This includes children's involvement in libraries and community programs, youth voice activities, and involving children as decision-makers.
In a perfect world no one will be subject to abuse and discrimination because they born of a different father or mother than their siblings. In our world this right of protection is infringed upon every day in every community in the world. All beginning with infidelity. In some developing nations the discrimination goes as far as an execution.

Perhaps society is not becoming progressive, but regressing to a pillar of salt waiting to happen.

Coding in Visual Studio 2008 for ASP.NET seems to be an easier way of

To make matters more confusing the book says "Design View or Split View". The table menu only shows up in Split View if you entered it from Design View.

How Many Solar Panels Would It Take to Power The Entire World? [Data]

In this article, they discuss covering an area the size of Spain with solar panels. Mostly placing them in deserts. I wonder if we could reduce the greenhouse effect by absorbing normally reflected energy into these large panels in the desert. This article also only deals with our current power demand. What happens when we start in with the electric cars? Will there be such a paradigm shift that we will have to start creating more CO2 again to keep the planet warm?

After seeing how many nukes would it take to obliterate humanity instantly, I wanted some good news. Like, how many solar panels would it take to power the entire world? The entire surface of Africa, maybe? Actually, it's surprisingly less.

Click on the image to enlarge

Just 496,905 square kilometers. That's really nothing compared to the total world area: Less than the surface of Spain (504,030 square kilometers) covered with solar panels, distributed across deserts and areas with almost 24/7 sun, all year around.

Photography Sekritz

Most of the time you’ll want to set yourself up so that the sun is behind you, watching how the shadows are cast on the eyes and how it generally affects any lighting such as glare off the water’s surface. But why is it that the sun is always right above me and I can’t control it?

http://www.golden-hour.com/

You can’t control where the sun is, but you can control WHEN you use its light. Generally photos taken later in the day turn out a heck of a lot better. The light is warmer and more consistent as it drops under any cloud cover and has to travel through more atmosphere. The brows stop shading the eyes, the shadows get longer transition zones into light producing a more dramatic photograph.

If you notice your photos are turning out shadowy, try taking your pictures in the time frames you’ll get from this site.

Life.

Life can be defined as the property or quality that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate matter, manifested in functions such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli or adaptation to the environment originating from within the organism. Enter the evolving robot article. http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/08/real-life-decepticons-robots-learn-to-cheat/

So we define life as functions in which metabolism, growth, reproduction, response originating from within the organism. Well, it has a metabolism, but it doesn't grow... yet. It responds, but it doesn't reproduce... yet.

Perhaps we are on the cusp of a new classification in which life will be a secondary consideration. A machine definitely doesn't have to be sentient to reproduce. For that matter neither does a living being. Even humans don't need to be sentient to reproduce. Perhaps this is the mystery of the universe. Machines. After all isn't our solar system just a giant machine? It uses the force of gravity to cycle light/darkness cycles. Sure it's not conventional in the sense of having gears or levers, but neither do chargers that use magnetic induction.

Are we creating the diatomes of a silicone-based life form civilization that will survive past our extinction and is it possible that some long lost technology with evidence directly beneath our noses begat us?

What would you use to describe it?

The problem with the music industry.

The problem with the music industry today is that everyone but the artists get paid. They're fighting tooth and nail to keep it this way. You get distribution, production, markup, tax etc etc etc. That $20 you're paying for a disc doesn't go to the artist, maybe $1 of it if they're lucky.

Enter music "pirating". Sure it's pirating. Sure it's duplicating. But we've been doing this ever since our portable devices could record. In fact, most tape decks had two decks, one for recording other people's music. Blanks were plentiful. So why is it that the music industry is suddenly threatened by software?

It's not. It can track who's making the dubs now. It used to be that only the high profile money makers could be tracked. Bootleggers so to speak. So why isn't it stopping now that it can be tracked? It's become as prolific as riding a bicycle. Everyone knows someone who has downloaded music, or has someone that can do it for them. The record industry makes a few token law suits stick, shuts down a service here or there, but in it's place four more pop up.

For every dollar fined to a "music pirate" there are 50,000 more downloads going on. People stop buying music when they get wind of this "free music service" shamelessly promoted in the news. Only now that they know they can get caught they install peer guardian or get on a DHT tracker. The people want to download. Music is about as important to human welfare as food and water.

So what about paying for music? $1 a track? $10 an album? That's a good deal right? Not when you can get it for free with little to no fear of repercussion. Album artwork? Well... it's not really all that great most of the time, and half the time it can be downloaded with the album. I'd rather spend $240 on an original piece of artwork locally that I can display on my wall instead of sticking it in a CD case. So what about services that let you stream music for a fee? Well lets get into that.

Last.fm will charge you $5 a month for unlimited streaming music. The only problem with this is that you have to be connected to the internet to access the service. You can't save your favorites or modify the music in any way, you have no access to "unreleased tracks" or non-label artists, and if the site goes down you don't have music. Those are the downsides. The upside is that you have access to an incredible music library with a rating system and community aspect, also the artists you listen to get royalties from your plays.

Royalties paid directly to the artist with only one middle man, no distribution fees. Hmm. And they don't just get paid for the first CD that is purchased then sold to a pawn shop then stolen then given to your cousin. They get paid for every play by how popular their song is. Radio stations don't get to decide what the public listens to in this format.

Now bear with me on this one, we pay a license fee to fish, hunt and drive. This is to compensate for the services provided to monitor the usage of these resources. Music isn't a local resource though, it's global. One might even say universal. Why not a "music hunting" license? Say $50/yr lets you download whatever you like. If you're caught downloading without a license you forfeit any works that are not your own and pay a one-time $500 fine. All of this would go into funds that pay the artists directly.

That's affordable, reasonable and enforceable. And the "record companies" can still make "records". However now music labels will become just that. Music.

Does the RIAA really think they're going to collect 23 million from a person downloading music? That person would have to clear 500,000/year to pay that amount. Silly.

What should I avoid while taking Yasmin?

Do not smoke while using Yasmin, especially if you are older than 35. Smoking can increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack caused by birth control pills.

Yasmin will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases--including HIV and AIDS. Using a condom is the only way to protect yourself from these diseases.

Better Place to put recharging points at railway stations

Better Place, Shai Agassi's electric car initiative, will join forces with another "green" method of transport: the train. Israel Railways and Better Place are to sign an agreement today to establish recharging points for the firm's car batteries in railway station parking lots. Better Place has already reached similar agreements in principle with a number of large companies, malls and the kibbutzim. The plan is for 220 charging points in Railways' parking lots, for use while car owners take the train. This is a relatively small percentage of the tens of thousands of cars that park every day at the stations. Charging points will be available at the following stations: Haifa-Bat Galim, Haifa Center, Acre, Beit Yehoshua, Herziliya, Hod Hasharon, Petah Tikva-Segula, Petah Tikva-Kiryat Arye, Bnei Brak and Pe'atei Modi'in. Deep Mike Tyson Interview

I have to say I'm impressed with the progress Mike has made in his introspection.

Looking back, he says, perhaps the biggest problem was achieving so much so young. "If you want to see a tragedy, just take a kid who's 19, 20 years old - some kid from the hood who's got some talent - and give them $50m. I didn't know what to do. By society's standards, you reach that level and people bow down to you. I never understood that."

Shai Agassi give us retrofits.

Shai Agassi would better serve better place by introducing a retrofit for existing vehicles. It should be easy enough to replace a fuel tank with a battery system and then drop in an EV motor in place of the internal combustion engine linking up to the existing drive train.

The problem with the above idea is that most cars will be moving to a system where four motors are contained within the wheel along with suspension making for a more modular car with better traction  and handling.

More importantly the cars will be more reliable.

Every car will have four motors. Should one of the motors die, one would simply drive with less power and either rear or front wheel drive only disabling the paired motor.

Motors could now also be rotated to ensure even wear.

Just an idea for now, but we'll see what happens in the near future.

Time for a tune up

I bought this plugin for iTunes called "Tune Up". It's pretty neat, you drag and drop some files onto it and it'll find the files through Gracenote, then update all of your ID3 tags. Pretty useful!

Keeps your ID3 tags in order and in turn keeps your music library sorted up. I'm liking iTunes the more that I use it. It's not slim but the rating system is nice, and "Genius" is just what it says, pretty darned genius. It'll suggest tracks for you.

Of course it tries to sell them but I just pop into soulseek and grab them. How nice is it to have an MP3 player and phone that works with my car? Pretty damned nice let me tell you.

Free OCR (text from scan)

A neat little website for those of you who think there is a few days of data entry ahead of you just to glean some text from printed material. I wish I had this back in 2005 :)
